Who are we?

The Portsmouth Research Hub was set up by Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust  (PHU) and the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), alongside other local health and care organisations, to support COVID-19 vaccine research.

The Portsmouth Research Hub is one of three new research facilities in the Wessex region, which covers Dorset, Hampshire, South Wiltshire and the Isle of Wight. There are two other research hubs in Bournemouth and Southampton.

What do we do?

Throughout 2021, the Portsmouth Research Hub will run nationally prioritised COVID-19 vaccine trials to help researchers find more safe and effective vaccines to help end the global pandemic.

In the future, it will also be used as a space to host research studies in other healthcare areas such as diabetes or asthma.

The Portsmouth Research Hub aims to create more opportunities for the people of Portsmouth and its surrounding areas to get involved in health and care research.

Why is additional COVID-19 vaccine research needed?

As the NHS roll-out of approved vaccines progresses, research trials into other COVID-19 vaccines will continue to collect important information such as which vaccines work best for different groups of people and which vaccines offer the most protection against variants of concern.

The Portsmouth Research Hub will provide local residents with the opportunity to take part in COVID-19 vaccine research and help researchers answer these important questions.
